Ottawa Artist Marc Adornato has spent the last 6 months restoring 1930-40s vacuum tube radio's by hand, and converting them into MP3/iPOD speakers for your home, office, bedroom, or cottage enjoyment.

These unique, one-of-a-kind antiques are the actual 1930s and 40's radios
(Philco, RCA, Philips, Marconi, General Electric, etc) made of the original
gorgeous wood, but have been electronically modified and upgraded with modern
speaker and stereo components so that you can plug in your MP3 player, iPod,
laptop, or any other audio playing device.

The sound is bold, loud, and fantastic.
The simplicity is refreshing.
And the beauty of these ornamental historic gems get a second chance at life!

How do they work?
Simple. You plug the power cable into the wall, and flick the power-cable
switch ' ON'.
Then plug the 1/8" stereo jack (mini headphone jack) into your iPod,
MP3, or laptop's headphone port and you're good to go!
You control the volume and music selection with your MP3 /iPOD device.

How does he do it?
Adornato, first finds these dilapidated antiques by scowering flea markets, barn sales, estate auctions, etc.. In most cases, the radios have not aged well. The buttons are often missing, the speakers are crumbling, the material weathered and torn, the dials are cracked or missing, and the wood usually appears to be beyond repair.
He then inspects the electronics to see if the radio can be restored to its original working state. (Some of the severely weathered Vacuum Tube Radios still work after 60+ years of being in a barn!)
Once it is determined if the radio will be restored to its original state, or converted into a Radio-Mod-Box, the insides are removed and the long process of stripping, cleaning, and refinishing the wood shells begins. This process is not only toxic, but can take days to complete.
Adornato spends days restoring the rare exotic woods to their natural state, and rebuilding these vintage gems piece by piece. If pieces are missing, great effort and creativity are put into recreating the same appearance, or finding other antique pieces from the same era to preserve the aesthetic.
Adornato begins the craft of re-assembling the pieces, putting in new vintage material for the speakers, and upgrading the sound system with modern stereo and speaker components.
The Radio-Mod-Box's are now complete. Adornato ads a few final touches, including:
signing, numbering, and dating each piece on it's completion date, and sealing
the rear to keep dust and other elements from entering the unit.
